About Us
The WSU Extension Integrated Weed Control Project has been growing and adapting since its initiation in 1999, then the Quad County and Colville Reservation Bioagent Project, and now has a presence across the entire state of Washington. The Ferry County Extension office directed the project for its first eight years and saw significant success, particularly with the release of the lesser knapweed flower weevil (Larinus minutus), which led to wide-spread suppression of diffuse knapweed (Centaurea diffusa). This success resulted in greater financial support and allowed for an increase in public outreach efforts and, in 2002, expansion westward under a new name, Integrated Weed Control Project (IWCP).
In the fall of 2007 the IWCP leadership was transferred to the King County Extension office, but the project focus and staffing remains statewide. We promote the use of integrated weed control methods, including biological control, throughout Washington State at no cost to landowners and land managers. We collect USDA-approved biocontrol insects from Washington and neighboring states for redistribution throughout Washington on large scale weed infestations, following the International Code of Best Practices for Classical Biological Control of Weeds. We also strive to increase awareness and utilization of biocontrol and integrated weed management among public and private land managers through educational events, printed materials, presentations, posters, demonstrations, and newsletters.
